Jim, Help me understand this graph... It is the Producer Price Index, which I'm not familiar with, but believe this representative of the "inflation" over the past 40 years?
The PPI is the oldest stat so it is used for long time-series analysis.
As a government statistic, it is inherently flawed and suspect. If anything, prices -- and the decline of the purchasing power the dollar -- are greater than shown.
