For those interested, my other big count occurs during the Columbus Day weekend, when I typically ride to Carter Caves, Kentucky -- via Portsmouth. Along the way, I usually count close to 100 dead snakes. Yuck!
The count seems to be weather dependent. The snakes are mostly 4 to 6 inches, but snakes nonetheless.
Still, counting snakes is a fun way to pass the monotony of riding 23 South. Of course, once across the bridge into Kentucky, the scenery changes for the better. (Not to say that Ohio has bad scenery, just that riding 23 South is something other than pleasant.)
note: Of course, head to an Olentangy board meeting if you want to encounter snakes throughout the year. These snakes are of the elected kind, slimy and full of venom. Luckily, board member Smith -- the only non-snake -- is immune to their bite.

Many years ago, I saw a documentary about reptiles. They set up mock road situations. First they would put a fake turtle in the road to see what would happen. As cars came, not one driver hit the turtle. The drivers would either swerve to avoid the turtle or over half of them stopped the car and moved the turtle off the road. The same was done with a fake snake. No one stopped to rescue the snake. Few swerved to avoid the snake, most just ran it over. About 10% of the drivers who ran it over actually stopped and backed up to run over it again!
One can only hope the same happens to the snakes on our board, but with votes at the ballot box instead of a car.
